The Russians Are Coming (Movie 1966)

To unite a country, having a common enemy often helps. For Europeans right now, that enemy is Russia. Even though Russia hasn’t invaded any Western countries since World War II—they’ve mostly just weakened over time—we still see them as the bad guy.

Some people believe Russia might try to invade us sometime after 2027, but definitely before 2030. The idea of Russian invaders isn’t new. It’s shown up in many James Bond movies and even in a comedy called The Russians Are Coming. In that movie, the Russians don’t actually invade—they just accidentally land a submarine on a quiet American island. What follows is chaos, a love story, funny situations, and even a child hanging from a clocktower, which somehow helps bring the Russians and Americans closer together.

The sketch shows a young Russian sailor named Alexei Kolchin (played by John Phillip Law) who falls in love, even though he’s supposed to be standing guard.
