The Carry On series includes 31 comedy films made between 1930 and 2001, all featuring a recurring cast of actors. I’ve watched many of them, though not all. The films are classic examples of British comedy, often including familiar character types—like a flirtatious blonde in revealing outfits, a clumsy person, or someone with a squeaky voice and exaggerated mannerisms.
My favourite actor from the series is Sid James, who often played a cheeky, working-class man constantly getting into trouble—usually for chasing women and upsetting his grumpy wife.
In this small sketch (9 by 9 cm), I’ve portrayed him as a cynical patient who uses the hospital as a way to enjoy an easier life. He spends his days reading the newspaper, but more than anything, he’s using it as an escape from his everyday life with his wife.
